In my book I explained that 9-Ball and 10-ball is basically about staying in control. Either we run out in a controlled way or we play save in a controlled way. This means especially not to light-mindedly try and miss hard shots and, obviously, not to miss easy shots. In case we miss position, it’s better to play a safety than losing the game with a risky shot. With my practice game “Patrick’s X-Ball” you practice staying in control. (more…)

I recently discovered a new game that is great for 9-Ball and 10-Ball training or just for fun. Actually, it’s just a reinterpretation of an old game. I’m talking about American Rotation.

Normally, every mental coach would advise against imagining defeat before a match. After all, it is about preparing mentally for the victory through positive affirmations. And we know already that by imagining what we want, we allow it to happen. And our brain doesn’t understand a negative. So we must always think of winning. (more…)

I am fundamentally not happy with the power of my pool break. For sure, I emphasize again and again that precision comes before speed. But in games like 8 or 10 Ball, on a certain level you just don’t get past the power in your break. For this reason, a few months ago I decided to start an experiment: do 500 break shots and see what I could learn from it. (more…)

Playing hard shots such as a ball with an elevated cue (“jacked-up”), are a mystery to many players. They accept that such shots are simply reserved for better players and do not even try to expect more of themselves than to hit the ball correctly, perhaps in 20% of cases. Better players can aim better, period.
